In a distressed area, you want to have a single point of access and you want it to be in the most visible area of the home. All other access points should be secured from the inside. Bracing and/or boarding all secondary doors and windows is the best protection and this will discourage the opportunistic passer-by. However, there is only so much you can do....bottom line is if an experienced/determined burgler wants in badly enough, they will get in. But, by increasing the degree of difficulty to gain access your burgler may choose an alternate, less-secure target.
