Windows 8 for BPOs & REOs?

My computer is dying from old age and some abuse. Therefore I need to buy a new computer.

I'm nervous about learning a new platform, Windows 8, and being able to complete orders right out of the box. It took me months to learn and especially setup this computer just the way I liked it for all my work needs. Are there likely to be compatibility issues?

Do you have computer suggestions or experience with Windows 8 that would impact the purchase of a computer for BPO and REO?

Thank you in advance for your information and opinions.

  • You know - I was the same way.  Windows 8 has an easy learning curve on tablet, since it is a primarily touch screen oriented.

I use an Acer 7 inch windows 8 tablet from walmart for under $400 - not a lot of memory though 32G hard & 32 mini sd for a total of 64G.

Back-up weekly, disk clean & defrag regularly & you'll have plenty of operating space.

Windows 8 is being phased out already at Staples - now selling Windows 8.1 on most computers.

Not really a lot of choices, sadly some of our vendors in the industry are still lagging behind with xp (HUD), while others refuse to use windows 8 because of costs to change software.

I carry both 7 & 8 format tablets just in the event I have paperwork that just doesn't function on 8 ( my primary)

    Hope my input was helpful

  • Wish I had read this  before buying my new computer this week for the office. My old Del with XP crashed on me and I needed a new one ASAP. This new one is an HP with windows 8 and I can't even get it connected to the internet at the office. I still have my Dell with XP at home but it is probably going to need replaced this year too.

  • Yes.  Get a windows 7.  Dell and HP both are offering them, but for how long....?....or look on Craigslist for a newer used Windows 7 system.

All the retail stores where I live only have Windows 8 - yikes!

I just had to make the switch too, because I was running XP and that will not be compatible with anything the middle of 2014 and runs super slow now.

My computer tech said Windows 7 will be around and supported for many years to come.

    • You can order directly from Dell or HP on n their websites on line..  They are both great companies to work with.

  • Loraine - Now expert advice from one who knows little about computers

Go ahead and get the new machine. Take it to a local shop, have W 8 completely removed and W 7 reinstalled. then have all of your programs and files transferred to your new W 7.

Had to do that last month on wifey-poo's new box

    • how much does it cost to remove windows 8 and install windows 7?

      • Linda - My guy charged $150 remove 8 and install 7.

        • Marvin,

That's pretty steep for an OS downgrade considering you can buy a pretty good laptop/desktop these days for $400 with Windows 7 preinstalled.  It should only take about 2-3 hours to install an OS and a significant portion of that time the person doing it can be doing something else while it installs.

          • John - The charge included installing a program for Singer embroidery machine that was not compatible with W 8.

            Guess I shoulda mentioned that.

  • Check HP.com     There is a new version of Windows 7 and yoy can purchase a new window 7 computer.
